History Originally the evening primrose was only in North America. There it was worshiped by various Indian tribes as a valuable medicinal plant. It was discovered by the Algonquian Indians. They rubbed the mashed pulp of evening primrose seeds on the skin when having a rash. Other tribes used the evening primrose for different purposes. A boiled syrup made from the flowers was used against asthma and whooping cough as well as for digestive disorders and diseases in the gastrointestinal tract. Against diarrhea they drank a tea made from the leaves of evening primrose. With the discovery evening primrose seeds also arrived in the old world ; at first only as an ornamental plant in botanical gardens. From there it grew wild and finally reached Germany.
