The History of Father’s Day
Like the Mother's Day Father's Day has its roots in the United States. Inspired by Mother’s Day the American Sonora Smart Dodd (1882-1978) initiated in 1910 the Father's Day. Her father, William Smart fought in the American Civil War (1861-1865) and was one of the Civil War veterans. After the death of his wife he was a single parent who raised his six children all alone. In gratitude for his selflessness and care Sonora Smart Dodd organized in 1910 the movement to honor fathers. Only in 1972 a proclamation was signed by President Richard Nixon, who declared the third Sunday in June a permanent national holiday for fathers.
In addition to Father's Day, the International Men’s Day is celebrated on 19 November in many countries by men and boys, which are no fathers.
